Prince Harry served with the British Army in Afghanistan and saw the physical and mental effects of war on his comrades. His goal was to give wounded soldiers a renewed appreciation and courage to live, and to enable rehabilitation through sport. In the USA he experienced sporting competitions for American veterans first-hand, and so the idea of the Invictus Games for soldiers wounded in action and for veterans from different nations was born.
Invictus is the Latin word for undefeated, invincible. It embodies the goals of the Invictus Games, which shows wounded soldiers ways to new perspectives in life
Henley was diagnosed with bone tuberculosis at the age of twelve. A few years later, doctors amputated one of his legs below the knee. When surgical removal of the other leg was proposed in 1873, Henley resisted this amputation. Finally the second leg was saved. The poem describes Henley’s battle with the disease after a two-year recovery.
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
